There are several possibilities for consultations. Which of these are most suitable for you, depends on your circumstances. Was the delivery very recent, then lactation services at your bedside are the obvious option. Such a first consultation takes about ninety minutes  or two hours.
It may be that in a later stage, you still prefer being helped at home, because you are most comfortable there or because it is inconvenient for you to come to the practice.

Sometimes a question can be dealt with on the telephone or through e-mail. It is up to the lactation consultant to decide whether the situation allows for that. Many things are hard to judge without direct contact. A telephone or e-mail consultation may seem practical or cheap under certain circumstances, but maybe the problem cannot be sufficiently determined or issues get overlooked. In that case, a personal (follow up) consultation is necessary. When, during a telephone or e-mail conversation, the lactation consultant gets the impression that she cannot properly assess the situation, she may indicate that a (follow up) consultation is required, before her care can be continued.

For a good insight in your situation, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire. After the consultation, you will be provided with a report summing up all that was discussed and the policy suggested. This, of course, is included in the fee.
