A womanly art

Breastfeeding is a skill that touches many aspects of motherhood and womanhood. Therefore, you can approach the lactation consultant with a wide spectrum of questions. Frequently asked questions deal with latching, milk production and pumping, but you can also think of illness in mother or child,
use of medication, baby’s growth or prematurity.

In the Netherlands, the training of lactation consultant is provided and monitored by the faculty of Health Care of the Hogeschool Utrecht. It is concluded with an international exam. The diploma grants the title of International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Every five years, recertification will be granted on the basis of sufficient continuing education recognition points and every ten years, the exam has to be passed again.
